St. Mary's Chapel in Snape Castle
Overview
St Mary's Chapel is home to a faithful congregation and open daily, for personal prayer, as well as to those who want to visit simply to enjoy its charms and history.
SERVICES
This parish alternates services between Snape Chapel and St Michael's Well Church. Our usual pattern in Snape is for a service of Holy Communion at 10.45am on the 2nd Sunday of each month and Evensong on the 4th Sunday (at 4pm in winter months and 6.00pm in the summer).
HISTORY
Visitors looking upwards in the chapel can only imagine the painted ceiling, created by the Italian artist Antonio Verrio, which once was there. Sometime before 1707 a plaster ceiling replaced the 15th century chapel roof. Verrio, who also worked on the ceilings at Burghley House for the Cecil family, painted the new plasterwork, and one imagines it was stunning. However, the chapel ceiling is worn to the point that none of Verrio's work is now visible, partly due to damage caused when the chapel was used to store grain and straw for several years. As the castle and chapel date from the 15th century and the chapel is on the upper floor of the castle, we regret that it is not wheelchair accessible.
